Forthcoming: Policy Forum on the global economic crisis taking place on 27 May 2009

|11 May 2009| Following the food and energy crisis, the developing countries are now confronted with a global economic downturn. All recent analyses show that all developing countries have been severely hit by the global crisis. Could the global economic crisis contribute to a wave of changes in EU development cooperation? On 8 April 2009 the EC released a communication package with 28 pledges to support developing countries including financing for development, aid for trade, aid effectiveness and the MDGs. During our Policy Forum entitled "Fighting the global recession's storm: Implications for European development co-operation" (27 May 2009, Brussels), leading experts will analyze critical issues surrounding the global recession and developing countries. This analysis will include the implications of the decisions made by the G20 and those formulated in EU policies. It will also include an analysis of recent recommendations made by the European Commission under the Communication “Supporting Developing Countries in Coping with the Crisis”.

EDC2020 project launched in Brussels (2 June 2008)

Jean-Michel Baer

|4 June 2009| On 2 June 2008 the EDC2020 project was launched at Residence Palace in Brussels.

During the opening session, Jean-Luc Maurer, President of EADI, described the genesis of the project and placed it within the associations context and its predecessor EDC2010. Jean-Michel Baer, Director of the Directorate Science, Economy and Society at DG Research held the key note speech and pointed out the importance of EDC2020 to the European Commission. Finally, Simon Maxwell, Director of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), presented the initial working paper and the thematic framework of the project.

Project issues such as "New actors in international development", "Energy security, democracy and development" and "Climate change and development" were discussed with 80 conference participants during three thematic panels. The work package leaders Sven Grimm, Richard Youngs and Leo Peskett outlined the project issues and engaged in first panel discussions with Yang Guang (CASS), Ana Maria Gomes (European Parliament), Jos van Gennip (SID Netherlands), Imme Scholz (DIE), Merylyn Hedger (IDS) and Walter Kennes (DG Environment).

Forthcoming: EDC2020 project launch conference in Brussels

15 May 2008 | 2 June, Residence Palace, Brussels

The kick-off conference will look at issues ranging from new actors in international development to energy security, democracy and political development, European development policy and climate change.

  • What effects will emerging actors such as China, India and Brazil have on European thinking about aid instruments, modalities and organisation of the European aid system?
  • What might climate change mean for current and future  policies in areas such as agriculture, trade, disasters and risk reduction and humanitarian assistance?
  • Is the energy security imperative driving a heightened focus on development or undermining the latter?
